About the Links, Inc.
San Jose Chapter Chartering Date: 1981
The Mission of the San Jose Chapter is to promote and engage in educational, civic, and
inter-cultural activities in order to enrich the lives of its members and the larger community,
and to work together towards achieving common goals.

We provide services in five facets:  The Arts, International Trends, National Trends and
Services, Health and Services to Youth.

NATIONAL TRENDS AND SERVICES
The mission of this facet is to empower the membership to effectively empower the various communities
served.  Various health initiatives including Walk for Health, Million Pound Challenge are just a few of
the activities the links promote within Santa Clara County.

SERVICES TO YOUTH
A range of innovative, substantive and sustainable Pre-K-16 programming which contributes proven
results to key educational or social/community issues.  The San Jose Links are a partner with the Santa
Clara Alliance of Black Educators and with The Arts programs.

INTERNATIONAL TRENDS AND SERVICES
The Links, Incorporated has a mission through it’s Global Trilogy of International Trends and Services,
Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and the Signature Program, “Education Across the Miles” to
expand the global platform for programs designed and developed to service the educational, health and
cultural needs of people of African descent throughout the world. San Jose has also adopted the Lost
Boys of Sudan and promote the national programs for Mama Kits and support some of the needs of local
schools built in Africa by the Links Inc.

THE ARTS
Presently, there are three programs in The Arts as follows:
  • The Arts on the Move: Link Sisters in Cinema,
  • Project Walking Fete: Make Health a Habit!
  • Signature Arts Program: Classics Through The Ages

The Arts on the Move: Link Sisters in Cinema program creates dialogue, which sparks action for upward
mobility among all people of color, and dispels existing myths about people of color.

Project Walking Fete: Make Health a Habit! Poster Art Contest has encouraged teaching the importance
of lifetime physical activity, particularly walking to children, youth and adults of color since 1995.

The Signature Arts Program: Classics Through the Ages focuses on classical arts education in the
performing arts, visual arts, film, literature, and theatre for youth of color through programming, hands-
on learning, and mentoring. It speaks to the artistic development of promising young artists of color and
utilizing their talents to promote art education.

The Links, Incorporated has a strong and rich record of support for the performing and visual arts,
especially where it focused on the presentation of artists of color.  Annual support for The Dallas Black
Dance Theater and our annual Spring Youth Recital for students help promote local achievement in the
arts in the Silicon Valley.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
The mission of the Health and Human Services facet is to promote and facilitate programs that support
the maintenance of good health and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color
through education, health advocacy, and optimal utilization of health resources. Community education
about health risks is crucial and The Links, Incorporated can play a significant role in providing it.
The areas of emphasis are cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and organ, tissue and blood donation.
